Website for Comp Plan update launched

39

Hanover County issued the following announcement on Jan. 19

A website, logo and social media campaign are announcing the kickoff of the process for updating Hanover’s 20-year Comprehensive Plan.

The theme is Envision Hanover and the website is www.envisionhanover.com

This website is the repository of information about the Comprehensive Plan. A link to it is also on the County’s website at www.hanovercounty.gov

Public engagement opportunities will be numerous and emphasized throughout this process of updating the plan. Open houses have been scheduled on Feb. 8 at Oak Knoll Middle School and Patrick Henry High School and on Feb. 10 at Atlee and Mechanicsville high schools. Each event will be held from 5-7 p.m.

Planning Director David Maloney told the Board of Supervisors that interviews with individual Board and Planning Commission members are underway as is the process of appointing a Citizen Participation Team.

The Planning staff is preparing materials for the community visioning and open houses. Ongoing work is evaluating growth trends, generating long-range planning assumptions regarding land use and population projections and developing a long-range planning methodology.

Envision Hanover also has a presence on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The open houses and drop-in events will be held in four phases throughout 2022. Drop-in events refer to opportunities that are offered at places where people congregate, such as a popular community activity.

The Community Participation Team will consist of each Planning Commission member and a citizen representative from each district who has a great interest in one or more of the focus areas.

Areas of focus will include land use; economic development; transportation and active living; environment and historic resources; housing; and resiliency and hazard mitigation. Each of these key topics will have a month or two of focus area meetings during 2022.

According to the current schedule, a draft plan update may be prepared in January 2023. Additional open houses and drop-in events will be scheduled to provide opportunities to discuss the draft plan. The Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors will each provide multiple public meetings to receive input from the community in addition to the open houses and drop-in events.

Formal consideration of the draft plan by the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors is not expected to take place until the summer of 2023.
