Webb, Bush Headline Offense for #15 R-MC Baseball at UMW

Juniors Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) and Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) both had two hits and two RBI as the 15th-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team was edged 6-5 at Mary Washington on Thursday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: Mary Washington 6, Randolph-Macon 5

Site/Venue: Fredericksburg, Va./Dickinson Stadium

Records: R-MC 9-2, UMW 10-5

How It Happened

  • The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead with two in the top of the first. Freshman Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) drew a leadoff walk and went to third when junior Hunter Cole (Norfolk, Va./Granby) reached on an error. Both runners scored on a base hit by Webb as RMC led 2-0.
  • RMC added to its advantage in the second. Junior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) had a leadoff single and scored on a wild pitch as the Yellow Jackets went up 3-0.
  • The Eagles put up four in the third to take their first lead. RMC responded in the top of the fourth. Junior Richie Dudley (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) started the inning with a single and scored on a groundout by Bush as the visitors leveled the score at 4-4.
  • UMW would reclaim the lead with two in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-4 advantage.
  • RMC cut the deficit in half in the eighth. Dudley was hit by a pitch with one away, went to second on a single by Myers and scored on a base hit by Bush to make it 6-5.
  • Webb and senior Carter Johnson (Southampton, Va./Southampton) had consecutive one-out singles in the ninth, but both were stranded as the Yellow Jackets fell 6-5.
By The Numbers

  • Along with Webb and Bush, Myers also had two hits and scored a run for RMC.
  • Schmitt and senior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) both walked twice.
  • Webb and Schmitt recorded stolen bases.
  • Junior Patrick Routsis (Midlothian, Va./St. Christopher's) pitched 2.2 innings in relief with three hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
