Henrico County Government has announced that County Manager John Vithoulkas is recognizing Barbara Melton, a longtime employee of the Henrico Police Division, for her upcoming milestone of 45 years of service with the department.
On July 22, 2025, the county posted: “County Manager John Vithoulkas is recognizing longtime county employee Barbara Melton, who on July 30 will reach 45 years of service with the Henrico Police Division. She has served under six police chiefs & four county managers during her career.” In a follow-up post on the same day, more details about Melton’s career were shared: “Melton, who currently works as management assistant for the Criminal Intelligence Unit, began her career with HPD in 1980 as one of two dispatchers handling calls for assistance. She also has worked as a records technician for the division.”
In recognition of her lengthy and dedicated tenure, Henrico County stated: “In recognition of her more than four decades of dedicated service to the county, Melton is being inducted into the County Manager’s Legacy Circle. Congratulations, Barbara!”
Henrico County serves a diverse and growing community. During the 2023-24 school year, its public schools enrolled over 50,000 students across all grade levels (source). The district saw an increase in total enrollment compared to previous years and includes schools such as Deep Run High School—the largest by student population—and others serving significant numbers at various grade levels (source). Black students represented the largest ethnic group in Henrico County schools during this period (source).
Barbara Melton’s induction into the County Manager’s Legacy Circle marks a notable point in both her career and in Henrico’s ongoing commitment to public service within its government agencies.
