Longtime Dale District Supervisor Jim Holland has been honored with the dedication of the Beulah Recreation Complex in his name. The ceremony took place on May 7, nearly two years after the center’s opening. Holland played a key role in converting a former school building into this community facility.
During the event, County Administrator Dr. Joe Casey announced, “We’re known for transparency in Chesterfield County – we don’t like to do surprises – but we’re going to make an exception to that rule today.” Holland, joined by his wife Judith and other guests, watched as county employees unveiled the sign for the James M. Holland Recreation Complex.
Expressing gratitude, Holland stated, “I want to thank each of you for being here today. It’s a huge honor. I’m forever humbled and grateful.” He was first elected to represent the Dale District in November 2007 and has served multiple terms as board chair and vice chair.
Holland is also a U.S. Army veteran, having served at Fort Liberty from 1972 to 1974. Professionally, he is an accounting professor at Virginia Commonwealth University and has been active in his church community.
Dr. Mark Miller from Midlothian District proposed dedicating the complex in Holland’s name with support from fellow board members. Board Chair Jim Ingle remarked, “It really is humbling to be able to bestow this honor on somebody while they’re here with us.”
Casey humorously noted that if Holland had voted on the dedication himself, it might have been a “4-1 vote” due to his humble nature.
Holland emphasized community service over personal recognition: “It’s always about the people. It’s not about me.” He was re-elected in 2023 and continues his service as one of Chesterfield’s longest-tenured supervisors.
