Peter Plourd, a long-time Chesterfield County resident, has been named one of three 2025 inductees to the county’s Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame. Plourd’s volunteer work spans multiple organizations and activities in the community.

Plourd grew up on a farm in northern Maine before enlisting in the Army. After his military service, he spent about two decades as a government contractor. He later worked in real estate and ran his own landscaping and home improvement business for roughly ten years.

“I thought I was going to retire for good then,” Plourd said in a recent interview.

He officially retired in 2017 but soon became active as a volunteer. Plourd now spends three afternoons each week volunteering at Chesterfield County’s Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Branch, which is located in the Virginia Department of Health building. He also volunteers as a starter at Sycamore Golf Course, combining his interest in golf with community service.

Plourd is trained as an instructor through the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), where he helps teach public education classes such as CPR, emergency preparedness, and first aid. Recently, CERT hosted an emergency preparedness booth at a Flying Squirrels game.

“Between CERT, MRC, and the golf club, I keep busy,” Plourd said with a laugh.

In addition to these roles, Plourd has served as treasurer for several homeowners associations and remains active with Manakin Episcopal Church through committee work and as a Eucharist Minister. While his sons were involved in Cub Scouts, he took on leadership positions within that organization as well.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Plourd dedicated significant time to outdoor testing centers and vaccine clinics—a commitment that sometimes required full-time hours. “It was early morning to late in the day, five days a week,” he said.

Being inducted into the Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame holds special meaning for him. “It’s quite an honor,” he added regarding his nomination. “When you look at the bios of all the 16 [nominees], it’s just really amazing.”

Plourd’s record reflects decades of public service across military duty, community health efforts during COVID-19, church involvement, and youth leadership.
