Chesterfield County Public Schools and the Chesterfield County Police Department have issued a joint message urging drivers to prioritize safety as the new school year begins. The announcement comes as families adjust to increased traffic and new routines associated with the start of classes.

Officials from the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors, Chesterfield County School Board, police department, and school division have coordinated efforts to address potential traffic challenges around schools. Their preparations aim to reduce congestion and ensure students’ safe arrival each day.

In their statement, they emphasized community cooperation: “Every child deserves a safe journey to school, and every parent deserves peace of mind as they send them on their way. The start of school brings increased traffic and new routines, and we ask for your support.”

Authorities encourage all drivers to follow posted speed limits in school zones, stay alert for buses and pedestrians, allow extra time for commutes due to heavier traffic during arrival and dismissal times, and respect directions given by school staff or law enforcement managing traffic flow.

“The well-being of our students is a responsibility we all share. We ask for everyone’s cooperation in following traffic rules and taking extra care, being mindful that some people will be unfamiliar with new routes and procedures,” the message stated.

The agencies also reiterated their commitment: “The safety and well-being of our students is a top priority. With your help, we can ensure that the start of the school year is safe, smooth and successful for every Chesterfield County family. Thank you for your continued partnership.”
