Mark Earley Jr., a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, emphasized the importance of cooperation with law enforcement and respect for due process in ensuring community safety. He reported that recent operations in Chesterfield are orderly. This statement was made on X.

“Keeping Chesterfield’s neighborhoods safe is a top priority of mine,” said Earley Jr., House Representative. “That includes supporting lawful cooperation between our local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. As a defense attorney, I also believe strongly in due process and fair treatment under the law. I’ve been in contact with our Sheriff, and at this time, operations appear orderly and safe.”

Chesterfield County, Virginia, has become a focal point for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and local law enforcement cooperation. According to Axios and the Virginia Mercury, recent courthouse arrests have reignited debate over balancing public safety and community trust. Local officials, following Governor Youngkin’s executive order, have pledged full compliance with ICE requests. However, civil rights advocates warn these actions deter court participation and strain community relations.

The Washington Post reports that at least 45 ICE courthouse arrests have taken place in Virginia since April 2025, including 14 in Chesterfield County over just three days in June. The sheriff’s office confirmed multiple daily arrests often target people appearing for non-violent offenses. Statewide partnerships with ICE and other federal agencies have resulted in over 2,000 removals and arrests in the past year.

According to Axios, Virginia ranks among the top five states for immigration enforcement, issuing over 2,000 removal orders in March 2025 and maintaining 21 active 287(g) cooperation agreements. Unlike states such as Massachusetts or New York, where judicial action limits ICE’s courthouse role, Virginia’s law enforcement policies strongly support continued federal-local collaboration.

Ballotpedia provides background on Mark Earley Jr., describing him as a Republican attorney and candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates with experience as a Commonwealth’s Attorney. His focus is on public safety, criminal law, and law enforcement cooperation with ICE. His legislative agenda supports state-federal collaboration and policies to deter criminal immigration.
