Chesterfield County Public Schools celebrated a significant step in the construction of its new west area elementary school with a topping-off ceremony on August 11. The event marked the placement of the final structural beam, an important milestone in building projects.

“This moment is symbolic. The final steel beam represents not just the completion of a building’s framework,” said School Board Vice Chair Lisa Hudgins. “It’s a visible reminder that we are building something lasting, something that will shape the lives of students for decades. This school will offer modern, adaptable spaces that support collaboration, creativity and curiosity. It will reflect the energy and enthusiasm of the students who will walk its halls and the dedication of the educators who will lead them.”

The ceremony included signatures from school and county officials on the last beam before it was installed atop what will be Chesterfield’s 41st elementary school. The beam featured several symbols: an evergreen tree for good luck and growth, a broom representing safety during construction, and an American flag to honor both patriotism and workers’ efforts.

“This school reflects the innovation, flexibility and student-centered design that define the future of education in Chesterfield County,” said Superintendent Dr. John Murray. “It will be a place that sparks curiosity, invites exploration and nurtures young learners for generations to come.”

The new facility is scheduled to open in August 2026 for kindergarten through fifth grade students in the Matoaca District. Funding comes from Virginia Public School Authority bonds as part of a $52 million budget approved by local voters through a community facilities bond plan in 2022. The building’s design follows Chesterfield’s elementary prototype, with exterior colors chosen by community members.

Chesterfield County Public Schools is currently the largest district in central Virginia, serving more than 64,000 students across 68 schools. More details about Chesterfield County Public Schools can be found at https://mychesterfieldschools.com/.
