Henrico County Government highlighted its efforts to repurpose unused land and reduce electricity costs through a recent project, according to tweets posted on April 18, 2026.
Sam Hudson, Henrico’s Sustainability Division Director, commented on the initiative: “We know that increasingly localities are sort of taking wind of this and beginning to assess the feasibility of doing it at other closed landfills,” (April 18, 2026). Hudson also stated, “so it’s great to know that Henrico County was on the leading edge of doing something like this and making good use of unutilized land.” (April 18, 2026).
The county reported significant projected savings from the installation: “The installation is expected to save taxpayers an estimated $600,000 to $700,000 in electricity costs over the course of the 30-year contract.” (April 18, 2026).
Henrico County Public Schools District serves as the only school district in Henrico County and enrolled more than 50,000 students during the 2023-24 school year. Deep Run High School had the highest enrollment among its schools with over two thousand students. The student body is diverse; Black students made up nearly thirty-six percent of total enrollment during that period. Overall district enrollment saw a slight increase compared to the previous year.
