Henrico County Government shared updates on the construction of a new firehouse in the Varina District, highlighting its significance for public safety and community responsiveness.

On January 6, 2026, Henrico County Government posted that “On Jan. 6, a crowd of hardhat-clad county and public safety officials celebrated the milestone as a crane hoisted the signed beam above the cinderblock walls as part of a ‘topping out’ ceremony.”

Varina District Supervisor Tyrone E. Nelson commented on the project’s impact in a tweet dated January 6, 2026: “Varina District Supervisor Tyrone E. Nelson said the new facility on Gay Avenue will allow the Henrico County Division of Fire to be more responsive to the community.”

Nelson further described features of the upcoming facility in another post from January 6, 2026: “It’ll be one of our more modern firehouses with up-to-date technology, plus increased living space for our firefighters,” Nelson said. “The new firehouse will also have three bays for the engines and equipment instead of the two at the current Firehouse 6.”

Henrico County is home to a single public school district that enrolled over 50,000 students during the 2023-24 academic year (source).
