Madison Gray, a 17-year-old competitive roller skater, will represent Team USA at two upcoming international events after overcoming a severe concussion last year. In September 2024, Gray suffered a head injury during training that left her unable to skate or attend school regularly for several months.

By July, Gray had recovered enough to compete at the USA Roller Sports Nationals in Reno, Nevada. She finished as runner-up in the Junior Women’s Division in both figures and solo free dance. These results qualified her for the World Figure Cup in Buenos Aires, Argentina later this month and the Artistic World Championships in Beijing, China in October.

“To be standing here today, knowing I’m going to be competing at the world championships is mind-blowing,” said Gray in an interview last week. “I’ve come a long way in just the last year. I’ve had some bumps in the road, but I bounce back stronger every time.”

Gray trains with the Chester Skating Team at Chester Skateland under coach Cindy Schrader, a former world champion skater. She balances her athletic commitments with academic responsibilities as a freshman biology major with a pre-med concentration at Longwood University. Her routine includes commuting from Farmville to Chester for three-hour training sessions six days a week.

“I’m going nonstop,” she said. “Having to wake up every day after getting only five or six hours of sleep, it gets to be a lot. I try to have some downtime on the weekend so I can rest properly to get ready for the next week.”

Gray will miss three weeks of classes while competing internationally but noted that her professors have been supportive and helped her plan how to keep up with coursework remotely.

“They’ve all said it’s a great opportunity for me so I’m trying to make the most of it,” she said. “I like school a lot – making the decision to do both was something I considered carefully. I’m going to do everything I can to do two things I love and be able to achieve at both of them.”

Her goal is to attend medical school and become an emergency room physician. During high school at Midlothian High School, she earned certification as a medical assistant and completed an externship at Virginia Cancer Institute.

“I saw some things and it just clicked – the adrenaline and everything, I think it’s really cool and I want to help people,” Gray added. “Being right there in the middle of it is where I want to be.”

Gray began skating at age 8 and considers skating her “safe space.” Her aunt Stephanie Ryan recalled driving her niece early on Saturday mornings before she could drive herself: “She had natural talent, but it takes time and dedication to fine-tune so she can do as well as she does.”

Coach Schrader emphasized that reaching this level requires commitment from everyone involved: “a commitment of your whole tribe.” As part of Team USA, Gray must cover all expenses related to travel, equipment, competition fees, and accommodations for both international events.

Asked about Gray’s potential on the world stage, Schrader responded: “I can watch her struggle some days in practice, then when she gets in front of the judges she’s able to pull it together. She just has a level of fight in her that helps pull through when she needs to. It’s a good thing to have,” Schrader said. “She has the mental capacity to be the best. She just has to keep working.”

Gray continues training intensely as she prepares for these competitions.
