Mayor Danny Avula has extended invitations to regional partners for discussions on the future of the drinking water system in Richmond, Virginia. The initiative aims to form a regional advisory group with Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico localities to ensure a sustainable water infrastructure.
The advisory group seeks to build on previous discussions between city leadership and neighboring areas, addressing the urgent challenge and opportunity presented by the region’s drinking water needs. The group’s objectives include identifying challenges, aligning priorities, and building consensus on strategies for resilience in the water system.
Mayor Avula emphasized the importance of collaboration across jurisdictional lines. “With the launch of this new water advisory group, we are coming together for honest dialogue, shared problem-solving, and meaningful action,” he stated. He expressed confidence that a shared approach could meet the needs of Richmonders and neighboring communities.
The kickoff meeting for the advisory group is scheduled for July. Work groups comprising subject matter experts will convene throughout summer and fall to develop initial recommendations. A final report outlining key recommendations is anticipated by spring 2026.
In addition to forming the advisory group, Mayor Avula has invited members of Richmond’s City Council and Henrico’s Board of Supervisors to a joint public meeting. This meeting aims to facilitate open dialogue about each locality’s distinct needs and priorities. “The creative ideas, deep experience, and collaborative spirit Council brings to the table will be critical in shaping thoughtful solutions for the region,” Mayor Avula noted. A public notice regarding this meeting will be issued soon.
