Wonnease Rhone, founder of the mobile food pantry 5 Loaves, has been recognized for her contributions to the community as one of three inductees into Chesterfield’s Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame this year. Rhone’s efforts reach between 500 and 700 people each month through food deliveries.
Rhone began her work in 2019 by preparing hot soup and sandwiches for homeless individuals from her kitchen. As demand grew, she noticed a lack of fresh produce at local food banks and decided to expand her approach. Her first partnership was with Woodside Farms, which provided surplus produce that helped address both food insecurity and food waste.
Over time, Rhone established connections with multiple farms and smaller pantries to coordinate pickups and deliveries. “Belmont United Methodist, for example, might have an abundance of produce,” she said. “They’ll call me, and I’ll go pick it up. If I have an abundance of produce, I’ll call and give it to them.” She emphasized the impact: “It may seem simple, but it feeds hundreds.”
Initially using her own car for deliveries, Rhone described how a donated van last year marked a significant turning point for the organization: “About a year ago, someone donated us a van. That was the turning point.” The additional capacity allowed 5 Loaves to increase its outreach and provide more fresh options.
Beyond distributing food, 5 Loaves offers information on housing resources, professional attire access, job application assistance, resume help, mock interviews, and other services aimed at supporting senior citizens who may no longer be able to work. Rhone also sets up tables at senior communities where residents can collect produce or attend informal cooking classes.
“I’ve always had a passion for feeding, clothing, and sheltering,” Rhone said. “The whole nine yards … I deliver to quite a few senior communities. I set up a table and spread everything out.”
In addition to running the pantry, Rhone participates in line dancing as part of the “Dancing Grannies” group—a pastime she shares with many seniors she serves.
Reflecting on her journey fighting hunger in Chesterfield County—where issues around food insecurity continue—Rhone offered advice: “Never give up on your dream, no matter how hard it gets.”
