City offices in Richmond will be closed on Monday, January 19, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. This includes City Hall and all city administrative buildings. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, January 20.

While municipal offices are closed for the holiday, city staff and partners are participating in various service activities to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Community members interested in joining these volunteer projects can find more information at cfengage.org.

There will be changes to waste collection services due to the holiday. Trash and bulk or brush collection scheduled for Monday will take place on Tuesday instead, causing a one-day delay throughout the week until Friday, January 23. The East Richmond Road Convenience Center landfill at 3800 East Richmond Road is open Saturday, January 17, but will close on Monday for the holiday before reopening Tuesday.

Recycling services remain unchanged and will operate as usual on Monday.

All branches of Richmond Public Libraries will be closed on Monday and reopen Tuesday. RVA311 services are available Saturday but not on the holiday; however, residents can still use self-service options through RVA311.com and its mobile apps at any time.

Richmond Public Schools are also observing closures: students have no classes on January 14 for the semester’s end, with both schools and offices closed again on January 19 before reopening Tuesday.

The Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities reports that all community centers and related offices are shut down for the day as well.

The Department of Public Utilities’ call center is not staffed during the holiday. Customers needing emergency assistance should dial 804-646-4646 (Option 1), while gas leaks require immediate evacuation followed by a call to 911.

Richmond Animal Care and Control is closed Monday; appointments resume Tuesday with regular walk-in hours returning Wednesday.
