The Richmond Department of Public Works will start its Annual Leaf Collection Program on October 6, giving residents several options for managing yard waste. City officials say leaf removal is important to maintain the health of public areas and stormwater systems.
Residents have four options for leaf collection. Starting October 6, up to six bags of leaves can be placed near their regular trash bins on their normal collection day. Biodegradable bags are preferred.
There is also an unlimited bag collection option based on the city’s trash collection schedule, which divides the city into four sectors. Sector 1 (Wednesday trash) will have pickup from November 7 to November 15. Sector 2 (Thursday trash) will be collected between November 21 and November 29. Sector 3 (Monday trash) is scheduled for December 5 to December 13, and Sector 4 (Tuesday trash) from December 19 to December 27.
Residents who want a do-it-yourself option can drop off loose or bagged leaves at two locations: East Richmond Road Convenience Center at 3800 East Richmond Road and Maury Street Leaf Drop-Off at 2900 Maury Street. The Transfer Station at 3506 North Hopkins Road accepts only bagged leaves. Residents are also encouraged to compost or mulch leaves, with compost bins available for purchase by contacting askpublicworks@rva.gov or calling 804-646-8325.
A vacuum service option is available starting November 3 for a $30 fee per request, which must be paid in advance. Payment can be added to a COR utility account or sent by mail with a check or money order payable to the City of Richmond. Requests should include the service request ID number generated through the RVA311 system.
Leaves must be raked to the curb or property line but not into streets or gutters, and sticks or stones should be removed before collection. Leaves will not be picked up from alleys.
After payment is confirmed, service will occur within fifteen business days unless delayed by holidays or bad weather. If service has not been completed in that timeframe without significant weather events, residents are advised to call 3-1-1.
