The City of Richmond is observing Older Americans Month this May, a tradition that began in 1963 under the guidance of the Administration on Aging. This month-long celebration honors the contributions and achievements of older Americans while reaffirming support for them across the nation.
The theme for 2025, “Flipping the Script on Aging,” highlights the importance of meaningful relationships and social connections in enhancing the health, well-being, and independence of older adults. It underscores how staying socially connected can help combat isolation and loneliness, allowing seniors to age with dignity.
Richmond’s Office of Aging and Disability Services will highlight various community-based programs aimed at promoting social engagement among older adults. These include book clubs, health initiatives, and educational workshops covering topics such as health benefits and legal rights. The city aims to keep older adults active, informed, and independent.
Mayor Danny Avula stated: “In Richmond, we believe that every generation deserves to be seen, heard, and supported. Older Adults Month is a time to honor the wisdom, resilience, and contributions of our seniors—who have helped shape the fabric of our city. By investing in their well-being, we’re not just supporting individuals—we’re strengthening our entire community.”
As Richmond’s older adult population grows, the city remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment where residents of all ages can thrive through connection.
