On September 30, the City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities will conduct field tests on a major water transmission main along Hermitage Road. This activity is part of a larger project to relocate the 36-inch water main, which supports the Diamond District development and connects with water systems in Hanover and Henrico Counties.
The public utilities departments from Richmond, Hanover, and Henrico have coordinated efforts for this project. Each team will participate in the field tests to help ensure that the regional water system remains stable and resilient during the transition period. The contractor is expected to connect the new section of pipe to the existing system between mid and late October 2025.
According to city officials, “This is to ensure water system stability and resilience while the project contractor ties-in the new, relocated water main to the system – currently anticipated for mid to late October 2025.”
During these tests, crews will analyze how well current operations maintain adequate pressure when demand is high. They will be monitoring closely throughout the morning event, which should finish by 10 a.m. on September 30.
While no significant service disruptions are expected, some residents in neighborhoods such as North Side, Scott’s Addition, Chamberlayne, Richmond Raceway, Highland Park, and Mechanicsville may notice lower than normal water pressure between about 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., as adjustments are made if needed.
“The regional team will be closely monitoring and in constant contact throughout this event – which is expected to be complete by 10 a.m. that day,” according to information released by officials.
