The Department of Public Works (DPW) in Richmond, Virginia, is set to begin a new project aimed at improving safety and accessibility along Main and Cary Streets, between Arthur Ashe Boulevard and Belvidere Street. This initiative includes the installation of pedestrian curb extensions designed to increase pedestrian visibility and decrease crossing distances.

The project is part of the city’s commitment to speed management, safety, and equitable access for all road users. It aligns with the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan by employing a complete streets approach to ensure safe access for everyone. Community input collected through surveys and public engagements has played a significant role in shaping the project’s design.

Intermittent lane closures and minor disruptions are expected during construction. However, efforts will be made to minimize the impact on the community. Drivers are encouraged to reduce their speed in work zones and provide adequate space for construction crews.

Construction is expected to start this month with completion anticipated by April 2026, depending on weather conditions.

The City of Richmond’s Department of Public Works is among only 195 accredited public works agencies in the United States. Its responsibilities include leaf collection; street maintenance; trash collection; recycling; grass cutting; graffiti removal; parking enforcement; urban forestry; traffic signals maintenance; civil engineering tasks, and more. The department’s budget comes from the general fund of the City of Richmond.
