On April 25, 2025, the Department of Government Efficiency announced a significant reduction in AmeriCorps programs across the nation. The decision impacts 80% of these initiatives, including Richmond’s RVA Health Corps, which provides essential health education and access to care for thousands of residents.

Despite this setback, Richmond’s city officials have devised a plan to sustain their AmeriCorps program until August 2025. They will utilize matching funds from previous years to continue operations. “This program is too important to let go,” stated Mayor Danny Avula. “We’ve seen firsthand the difference it makes in our communities, and we are committed to ensuring its impact continues.”

Currently, 25 AmeriCorps members work with various community organizations such as Richmond Henrico Health District, Bon Secours, VCU Health, Feed More, Waymakers Foundation, Crossover Healthcare Ministry, La Casa de la Salud, Help Me Help You, and Liberation Family Resource Center.

In the second quarter of this year alone, these members have served over 8,000 residents in Richmond. More than 6,500 individuals reported improved health knowledge and access to vital resources that enhance their quality of life.

Richmond’s AmeriCorps program has been instrumental for nearly two decades in fostering civic engagement and community support. It addresses diverse needs like home repairs for vulnerable residents, early childhood literacy support, high school preparation for further education, Peer Recovery Coaching services, and maintaining public spaces.

The City of Richmond remains dedicated to service and community development despite federal funding challenges. Officials are determined to collaborate with partners and funders to navigate the difficulties facing the AmeriCorps program.
