The City of Richmond marked the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month by lighting City Hall in pink. The display aims to show support for survivors, remember those lost to breast cancer, and encourage awareness and early detection.

Throughout October, the Department of Human Resources’ Benefits and Wellness division is offering educational events and resources for city employees. Activities include mammogram appointments, wellness webinars, resource tables, and team engagement focused on breast cancer awareness. The goal is to help employees prioritize their health and foster a supportive workplace.

“This month is not only about awareness but about creating safe spaces and access to care that supports the whole person,” said Director of Human Resources Tyrome Alexander. “As a City, we are united in hope; honoring survivors, remembering those we’ve lost, and driving progress toward a cure.”

The Benefits and Wellness team is seen as important in building a positive culture at City Hall. Their efforts reflect the “people first, people always” approach supported by Chief Administrative Officer Odie Donald II. The team works on initiatives that address not just physical health but also mental, emotional, and family well-being.

These programs align with Mayor Danny Avula’s focus on supporting families in Richmond. According to city officials, supporting employee health helps strengthen families across the community.

The city’s programming this year has been supported by organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Cigna Healthcare, Sentara Healthcare, Marathon Health, Airrosti, and the Office of Sustainability. Old Tavern Farm and Agriberry Farm have also contributed through the COR Produce Stand. Employees are encouraged to participate in these activities during October.
