The City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities (DPU), in collaboration with engineering firm TY Lin, has received recognition from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Metropolitan Washington (ACEC/MW) for two infrastructure projects. The Mayo Island Park Design and the Chimborazo Drop Shaft & Sewer Replacement projects were both awarded 2025 Engineering Excellence Awards.

The Mayo Island Park Design project is part of the city’s initiative to revitalize public park spaces. The Chimborazo Drop Shaft & Sewer Replacement project aims to improve wastewater infrastructure, which is expected to enhance system reliability and protect both the James River and public health.

The awards were presented at the ACEC/MW 2025 Engineering Excellence Awards ceremony on December 16, 2025. The event honors projects that display significant achievement in engineering, innovation, and collaboration.

Scott Morris, Director of the Department of Public Utilities, stated: “These projects show how engineering excellence translates into real world benefits for our community. These projects not only strengthen essential infrastructure systems, but also enhance the spaces Richmond residents use every day.”

Laura Bendernagel, Deputy Director, Senior, Engineering Services added: “These awards reflect the strength of our partnerships and the dedication of the teams working to improve Richmond’s infrastructure. Both projects required thoughtful planning, technical expertise and close coordination, and we are proud to see that work recognized at the regional level.”

The DPU acknowledged TY Lin for its role in designing and delivering both projects. Project managers Susan Hamilton and Howard Glenn were also recognized for their leadership alongside other members of the DPU team.

The Department reiterated its commitment to providing high-quality infrastructure that supports public health and environmental stewardship for Richmond residents. The City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities serves over 500,000 customers in the metropolitan area by providing natural gas, water, wastewater, stormwater, and streetlight services.
