The Department of Public Works in Richmond will begin work to replace old traffic signal equipment with all-way stop controls at several intersections. The affected locations are 4th Avenue at Brookland Park Boulevard, 4th Avenue at Magnolia Street, and Meadowbridge Road at Carolina Avenue/Woodcliff Avenue.
According to the department, during the week of October 6, weather permitting, the current traffic signals will be switched to an “all red flashing pattern for one week.” At the same time, new all-way stop signs will be installed on all approaches to these intersections.
In the following week, starting October 13 if weather allows, removal of the existing traffic control signals is scheduled to begin. This phase will include intermittent lane closures as crews remove traffic signals, poles, and other related equipment. Once this process is complete and equipment has been removed safely, the new all-way stop signs will serve as the main method of traffic control at these intersections.
The department issued a reminder about how drivers should navigate all-way stops: “Come to a complete stop (even if there are no other vehicles visible) Always stop for people crossing the street The first vehicle to arrive and stop at the intersection should be the first to go If two or more vehicles arrive at the same time, the driver on the right has the right-of-way.”
Drivers are also urged to give construction workers extra space and reduce speed when approaching orange cones in work zones.
