The City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities has announced changes to the RVA Illuminates event scheduled for Friday, December 5, 2025. The adjustments are due to weather forecasts that raise safety concerns for attendees, performers, and staff.

While the official holiday lighting at Kanawha Plaza will proceed as planned, it will be broadcast on WRIC 8 starting at 5:45 pm. Community members are encouraged to watch from home to continue the tradition of welcoming the holiday season together. All scheduled performances have been canceled in response to the anticipated weather conditions.

Chris Frelke, Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, stated: “We know RVA Illuminates is a cherished tradition for families across our city, and this decision was not made lightly. Our top priority is always the safety of Richmond residents, visitors, and staff. We’re grateful for the community’s understanding and look forward to celebrating the season in safer conditions.”

Further information about the department can be found on their social media channels or at www.rva.gov/parks-recreation.
