The Richmond Department of Public Works (DPW) is organizing its inaugural ‘DPW Touch-A-Truck’ event on Wednesday, May 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Main Street Station. This free event aims to educate elementary school-aged children about the vital services provided by public works professionals. Attendees will have the chance to meet staff members who operate various vehicles and observe live demonstrations of equipment in action.

The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is one of only 195 accredited public works agencies in the United States. The department’s responsibilities include leaf collection; maintenance of streets, sidewalks, and alleys; trash collection; recycling; grass cutting; graffiti removal; parking enforcement; urban forestry; street signs; traffic signals and pavement markings, as well as civil engineering tasks. Additionally, DPW manages city building upkeep, issues permits for work within the city’s right-of-way, oversees the RVA Bike Share program, and maintains the fleet of city vehicles. The department’s operating budget is sourced from the general fund of the City of Richmond.
