Residents of Richmond, Virginia, are invited to participate in a Speed Management Symposium on May 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Main Street Station. This symposium, organized by the City of Richmond’s Department of Public Works (DPW), aims to address speeding issues within the city and involves collaboration with several partners to enhance road safety.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about various initiatives, including the Safety Camera Program, which was implemented last year in thirteen school zones with a high incidence of injury. This program alerted drivers over 63,000 times about speeding in school zones during times when children are present. The symposium also includes dynamic presentations covering topics such as Vision Zero, Richmond Connects, and other roadway safety projects, along with insights from the Richmond Police.

Participants can engage with city departments and non-profit organizations through information booths and a Q&A session. RSVP is recommended for attending the event, which will also feature refreshments. More information can be found at the city’s public works website or by contacting them via email.

Richmond’s Department of Public Works, one of 195 accredited in the U.S., manages diverse city services, including street maintenance and traffic management. It plays a critical role in the city’s transportation safety efforts. The Safe and Healthy Streets Commission (SHSC), established in 1966, advises the Richmond City Council on transportation safety and focuses on reducing traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries to zero by 2030.

The SHSC’s annual priorities align with the City Council’s Vision Zero goal, supported by Mayor Stoney, which includes strategies to enhance the built environment and boost safety culture through proven countermeasures. Richmond’s Vision Zero Task Force, initiated by the Mayor and the SHSC, is responsible for executing the strategies outlined in the Vision Zero Action Plan adopted in 2018.

Further details on DPW services and city safety initiatives can be accessed through their website or by following their social media updates.
