VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH: VAERS Rare reports of inflammatory heart conditions

Doctor(1000)

Virginia Department of Health issued the following announcement on June 7.

Rare reports of inflammatory heart conditions (myocarditis and pericarditis) have been received by the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) in adolescents and young adults after receiving a mRNA COVID-19 vaccination (Pfizer or Moderna). Here’s what we know:

⚬ These rare events have mostly been seen in young males aged 16 years or older occurring within several days after the second dose of an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna).
⚬ The number of reports of these conditions do not exceed the expected number of cases in this population. So far, there has not been a causal link between receiving a COVID-19 vaccine and myocarditis or pericarditis has not been identified.
⚬ CDC and VDH continue to strongly recommend the COVID-19 vaccination for anyone 12 years or older as the best protection against the COVID-19 virus.
⚬ Most patients who received care responded well to medicine and rest and quickly felt better.
⚬ CDC and VDH will continue to monitor these reports and share more information as it becomes available.
⚬ Seek medical care if you are experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, or having feelings of a fast-beating, fluttering, or pounding heart.
