University of Lynchburg issued the following announcement on September 29.
The University of Lynchburg has appointed Esteban Soto III as its new chief of campus safety and security. He will assume his position on Oct. 15.
“After visiting the campus and meeting with students, faculty, and staff, I felt that I was a good fit and that the University of Lynchburg was a good fit for me,” Soto said. “The more I talked to stakeholders during my visit, the more excited I became about the position.”
Soto is a public safety professional with more than 30 years of multifaceted, executive-level experience in public safety, teaching, career development, risk management, and security.
His previous positions include director of the Professional Development Center at the Community College of Baltimore County and District Court of Maryland commissioner. He also was employed with the U.S. Marshals Service for almost 26 years.
Soto received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with an emphasis in police administration from the University of Texas and a master’s degree in public administration from Strayer University.
His responsibilities at Lynchburg will include planning, directing, and evaluating all activities of the department, and hiring, training, and supervising staff. He will also manage the departmental budget and track crime statistics to ensure compliance with University, state, and federal reporting responsibilities.
“Esteban brings more than three decades of experience in public safety and higher education, and is a perfect match for this position. I look forward to us all working with Esteban and the officers in Campus Safety and Security to ensure we maintain a safe, welcoming, and secure environment,” said Lynchburg President Dr. Alison Morrison-Shetlar.
Soto succeeds Bob Driskill, who retired in June after 35 years of service to the University.
