Virginia State University issued the following announcement on Jan. 20
VSU Community,
I am writing to you with great sadness to share the death of Mr. James Stegmaier, a member of the Virginia State University Board of Visitors.
Mr. Stegmaier transitioned early this morning after fighting a valiant battle against cancer.
After 37 years of dedicated service to Chesterfield County, Visitor Stegmaier was appointed to the Virginia State University Board of Visitors in July 2016 by Governor Terry McAuliffe and reappointed in July 2020 by Governor Ralph Northam.
Mr. Stegmaier was an undeniable asset to the VSU Board of Visitors serving as a member and chair of the Facilities, Finance and Audit Committee and as a member of the Personnel, Compensation & Governance Committee.
He was dedicated and steadfast in his service to VSU as evidenced by his continued commitment even through his illness. He would often state how much he enjoyed visiting the VSU campus and attending the board meetings. Mr. Stegmaier was respected by other board members who often sought his advice, thoughts, and opinions on board matters.
He was a well-liked and respected advocate for VSU as he served with intellect, vision and courage and contributed immensely to the mission of the University.
It was an honor to have him as a member of our VSU leadership. The Board and the VSU community will truly miss his presence.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Stegmaier Family and to all who benefited from his loyal service to Chesterfield County and to Virginia State University.
