Defense Shines In Women's Hoops Win Against WildCats

40

Randolph-MacOn College Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 22

Randolph-Macon led from start to finish as it defeated Randolph in a battle between two of the top teams in the ODAC. The Yellow Jackets defense shined as they limited the WildCats to their second lowest point total of the season against non-Division I teams.

The Jackets have now won four consecutive games for the first time this season while handing the WildCats their second-straight defeat.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 62, Randolph 45

Venue: Giles Gymnasium

Records: Randolph-Macon 10-3, 8-0 ODAC; Randolph 11-4, 5-3 ODAC

How It Happened

  • Leading 16-11 after one period of play, the Yellow Jackets used a suffocating defense to take control of the game. After Cameron O'Neil hit a 3-pointer to cut the hosts deficit to six at 20-14 with 7:57 to go in the first half, the Jackets limited Randolph to just one field goal the rest of the frame. While doing so, the Lemon and Black capped off the second scored on a 12-4 run.
  • The Lemon and Black broke the game open in the third. A Cheridan Hatfield (Sr., Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) jumper and a pair of baskets by Juliana Park (Fr., Fr., Fairfax Station, Va. / Davidson Day) including a 3-pointer gave them their longest run of the day and pushed their lead to 39-20.
  • Catherine Kagey (So., Roanoke, Va. / Faith Christian) eventually gave the Jackets their largest lead of the game with a layup early in the fourth that made the score 55-32. The lead hovered around 20 for the remainder of the game.
Inside The Numbers

  • Park led a trio of Yellow Jackets in double figures with 13 points. The bulk of them came from behind the arc with three 3-pointers. Hatfield added 12 with a pair of triples. Kagey finished with 10.
  • R-MC held the WildCats to just 14.3% shooting during the second quarter where they were 2-for-14.
  • The inside game again proved pivotal for the Jackets as they outscored Randolph 34-24 inside the paint. R-MC was 17-for-32 for 53.1% inside the paint.
  • Aimee DeBell (Sr., Studley, Va. / St. Gertrude) helped the Yellow Jackets be on the better end of a 49-44 rebounding advantage with seven boards.
  • Randolph-Macon held Randolph's Kyle Stark, last week's ODAC Player of the Week, to just nine points on 2-of-11 shooting from the field.
Up Next

Only three teams remain unbeaten in the ODAC standings. Two of them will square off on Wednesday as Randolph-Macon hosts Washington & Lee. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
