Virginia Union University Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 29
Virginia Union University moved into a four-way tie for the lead in the Northern Division of the CIAA by downing Shaw University 63-59 on Saturday, January 29, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
VUU's Tyriek Railey hit a crucial four-point play with 30 seconds left to play in the game to seal the win for the Panthers.
Railey led Virginia Union with 16 points while Darius Hines scored 13 points.
VUU's Robert Osborne scored 12 points and teammate Jordan Peebles added 10 points to round out the double-figure scoring.
Peebles and Keleaf Tate led the Panthers on the boards with six rebounds apiece.
"I thought we came out and played well in the first half," said VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler. "It got to the point where we got a little complacent in the second half. I thought the guys came out with a lot of fire and they wanted to get the win against Shaw University because they were number one in the Division. It was a tough game, but we expected it because (Shaw coach) Bobby Collins does a good job with Shaw's basketball team."
Virginia Union now faces Johnson C. Smith University at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
