Virginia Union University Athletics issued the following announcement on March 2
Virginia Union University's Dominique Mulero tossed a two-hitter as the Lady Panthers swept Washington Adventist University 10-2 and 8-5 in the season opener on Wednesday, March 2, in front of a near-capacity crowd at Panther Park in Richmond, Va.
Mulero struck out four in six innings of work while Arianne Burford slugged two doubles to power the offense in the first game.
Dominique pitched really strong today," said VUU Head Softball Coach Fred Burroughs. "(Washington Adventist) had a hard time hitting speed pitches."
In the second game of the double-header, Mya Lowe picked up the win in relief of starter Ericka Tiscareno, as the Lady Panthers came from behind to win 8-5.
"Ericka throws more off-speed pitches, so they were able to time their swings," said Burroughs. "That's why I put Mya Lowe in, because she has a faster ball. That's what gave them problems and why we were able to come back."
VUU's Brenda Reninga drove home Lowe in the sixth inning and Mya Tino drove in a pair of runs with a single as the Lady Panthers scored five runs to take the win.
The wins gave Virginia Union a 2-0 start to the season.
Virginia Union now faces Mercy College at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 6. at Panther Park in Richmond, Va.
