R-MC Baseball Rallies for Game 2 Win at WLU

Freshman Lincoln Lubsen (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) had an RBI single to break a 5-5 tie and spark a three-run ninth as the Randolph-Macon baseball team earned a split at Washington and Lee on Monday.

The Basics

Score: Washington and Lee 2-5, Randolph-Macon 1-8

Venue: Cap'n Dick Smith Field

Records: R-MC 10-3, 1-1 ODAC; WLU 8-6, 3-2 ODAC

How It Happened – Game 1:

  • Pitching dominated the first four innings. The Yellow Jackets stranded two in the third and fourth innings before finally breaking through in the fifth. Sophomore Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) had a leadoff single, moved to second on a base hit by senior Spencer Pietruszynski (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and scored on a single by sophomore Hunter Cole (Norfolk, Va./Granby) to give R-MC a 1-0 edge.
  • The Generals tied it in the bottom of the fifth and broke the deadlock in the seventh to take a 2-1 lead.
  • R-MC had a leadoff single in the eighth by senior Will Hass (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield), but were unable to bring him home.  
  • Bush led off the ninth with a bunt single and junior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) drew a two-out walk. Both were stranded in scoring position as the game ended, giving the Yellow Jackets 11 left on base for the game.
By The Numbers

  • Junior Hayden Snelsire (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) worked 7.0 innings for R-MC with four hits, two runs, one walk and six strikeouts.
  • Bush went 2 for 3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run.
  • Cole was 2 for 4 with a walk and one RBI.
How It Happened – Game 2:

  • After two scoreless frames, R-MC lit the scoreboard in the third. Pietruszynski had a two-out triple and scored on a double by Cole to make it 1-0.
  • The Yellow Jackets would add to their lead in the fourth. Sophomore Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had a leadoff double and came home on a base hit by Hass as the lead grew to 2-0. Freshman Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) delivered a two-out double as R-MC led 3-0.
  • WLU would scratch for a run in the fifth before the visitors added an insurance run in the seventh. Bush doubled to start the rally, moved to third on a bunt single by Pietruszynski and scored on a sacrifice fly by Webb as the Yellow Jackets went up 4-1.
  • The Generals would tally two in the bottom of the seventh to pull within one. R-MC would get one back in the top of the eighth. Junior Carter Johnson (Southampton, Va./Southampton) had a leadoff single, went to second on a base hit by Lautenschlager and scored on a double by Bush as the lead went to 5-3.
  • WLU added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to level the score at 5-5 before the Yellow Jackets rallied in the top of the ninth. Webb struck out to start the inning but reached first on a throwing error by the catcher. Webb went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a flyout to right by Hass. After Johnson was intentionally walked, Lubsen singled to left to plate Webb and break the tie. Lautenschlager had a base hit to center to plate Johnson and Lubsen scored on an error as the lead grew to 8-5.
  • After stranding the potential go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth, sophomore Wyatt Stanley (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) retired the side in order in the ninth with two strikeouts to earn the victory.
By The Numbers

  • Lautenschlager had three hits, including a double, and two RBI.
  • Johnson had two hits and two runs.
  • Bush belted two doubles, scored once and knocked in one.
  • Pietruszynski had two hits and one run.
  • Stanley (1-1) gave up one hit in 2.0 innings with three strikeouts in picking up his first win of the season.
