Softball Shuts Out Green Terror In Sweep

40

It was a great day for Randolph-Macon softball as the No. 10 Yellow Jackets shut out McDaniel in both games of a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Lemon and Black outscored the Green Terror 15-0 across both games and limited them to just five hits on the day.

The Basics

Score: No. 10 Randolph-Macon 3, McDaniel 0 (Game 1)

No. 10 Randolph-Macon 12, McDaniel 0 (Game 2)

Venue: R-MC Softball Field

Records: No. 10 Randolph-Macon 29-6, McDaniel 14-17

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • The scoring started early for the Yellow Jackets as they scored a pair in the opening frame. Amanda Lanyon (Fr., Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) was hit by a pitch to start the game and promptly stole second before Naomi Sadler (Fr., Emporia, Va. / Brunswick) singled up the middle to push her to third. Sadler then stole second, and in the process an errant throw to third allowed Lanyon to score.
  • Rilee Baughan (Jr., Warsaw, Va. / Rappahannock) proceeded to make it 2-0 as a double to left-center allowed Sadler to easily score from second.
  • Natalie Robinson (Jr., Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park) scored the next run in the bottom of the third on a solo effort as she left the yard on a home run to left field.
  • Gracie Ellis (Fr., New Kent, Va. / New Kent) didn't need anything else as she shut down the Green Terror. She fanned eight and allowed just two hits in the complete game.
Inside The Numbers (Game 1)

  • For Ellis, it was her sixth shutout of the season putting her in a tie for fifth in the nation.
  • Ellis is now 16-3 on the season putting her in a tie for seventh in victories. McDaniel's Hannah Costa took the loss which was just her second as she fell to 5-2.
  • Baugahn had a perfect on-base percentage as she went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks in the game.
  • Sadler went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Robinson's home run was her third of the season.
How It Happened (Game 2)

  • The first inning was even better in the nightcap as the Yellow Jackets hit around the order and scored seven to start the game. Baughan started off the rally with her 10th home run of the season to make the score 3-0 as Lanyon and Sadler both scored.
  • Maddy Bates (So., Arlington, Va. / Bishop, O'Connell), Cameron Hildebrand (Jr., Fincastle, Va. / James River), and Lanyon all added RBIs later in the frame and Olivia Owens (So., Salisbury, Md. / James M. Bennett) scored on a wild pitch for the other four runs.
  • Five more runs followed in the second. Robinson highlighted the inning with a bases-loaded double to right-center to score Lauren Lindsay (So., Dinwiddie, Va. / Dinwiddie) and Baughan. Bates followed with an infield single to score Owens from third.
  • Arianna Prymak (Fr., Woodbridge, Va. / Woodbridge) hit a sac fly to score Robinson and Lanyon singled to center to score Bates for the 12-0 lead.
  • Baughan kept the shutout streak intact, struck out five, and allowed just two hits to improve to 12-3. Sierra Livingston (So., Dagsboro, Del. / Sussex Tech) relieved her in the fifth and finished off the blanking with a one-hit inning.
Inside The Numbers (Game 2)

  • The Yellow Jackets have shut out their opponent in their last four home games.
  • Seven different players combined for the 11 R-MC hits on the day.
  • Baughan went 2-for-2 in the game to help her own cause and give her a 3-for-3 day from the plate. She totaled four RBIs and two runs scored on the day. She is now 6-for-11 over her last four games.
  • Bates had a big game as she was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Robinson went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
