One more round of golf stands between VCU senior Adrian Vagberg (Sollentuna, Sweden) and an NCAA Championship berth.
Vagberg shot 68 for the second day in a row to earn a share of sixth place through 36 holes at the NCAA New Haven Regional Tuesday at the Yale Golf Course. Vagberg, who advanced to the NCAA Regionals after capturing the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship two weeks ago, overcame a double bogey on hole No. 6, a 409-yard par 4, with birdies on 10 and 11. He recorded five birdies on the day and sits at 4-under.
The low individual not on an advancing team receives a berth to the NCAA Championships May 27-June at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The top five teams advance. Through two rounds, Vagberg is tied with Illinois' Adrien Dumont de Chassart, UConn's Caleb Manuel, Mark Power of Wake Forest and Ludvig Aberg of Texas Tech.
Wake Forest (-21) leads the team race, followed by North Carolina (-20), North Florida (-12), Georgia Southern (-12) and Texas Tech (-10). Illinois (-5) is sixth. UConn's Dumont de Chassart, like Vagberg, is playing as an individual.
Two Rams have previously reached the NCAA Championships as individuals: Reg Millage, who placed eighth at the East Regional in 2000 and Ted Brown, who was runner-up at the 2003 East Regional.
Vagberg is scheduled to tee off at 10:04 a.m. Wednesday. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
