Virginia Union University is ranked #4 in the nation in the first pre-season poll, revealed by HBCU Gameday on Thursday, June 16.
"HBCU Football polls go back at least 100 years, to the 1920s. HBCU Gameday hasn't been around that long — we're celebrating our 10th anniversary this month — but we have had some skin in the game for a minute now," wrote HBCU Gameday. "Without going too long, HBCU Gameday is introducing its inaugural staff polls for FCS and Division II/NAIA HBCU Football. Our polls will come out weekly throughout the season as we watch and vote.
Points were assigned for each vote, with a first-place vote being worth ten points and a 10th place vote being worth one point. Points were tabulated to compile the top 10.
"We want to thank HBCU Gameday for selecting our program as #4 in their pre-season rankings," Dr. Alvin Parker, VUU Associate Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, said. "A lot goes in to having a top-level program and our administration, student-athletes, coaches, and supporters have all done their part to earn this level of recognition. We look forward to hitting the ground running come fall camp"
