On June 23, 1972, Title IX was signed into law.
During that same period, Randolph-Macon College was transitioning to a co-educational institution. Women's athletics would be a significant part of that move.
The first varsity sport for women at R-MC was tennis, beginning in the 1972-73 academic year under head coach Rachel Anderson. Basketball was added in 1975, followed by field hockey in 1978, lacrosse in 1981, soccer in 1981, volleyball in 1995, softball in 1999, swimming in 1999 and golf in 2012 to bring the total to the current nine teams.
"Title IX has been an active part of my personal and professional life since Day 1," said R-MC Director of Athletics Jeff Burns. "I have experienced it as an athlete, coach, administrator, and parent of twin girls. I am proud to work for an institution that values equitable opportunities, access, facilities, and student-athlete experiences. There is a great deal to celebrate over the past 50 years and I look forward to playing a role as we move forward in the pursuit of equality for all our students and student-athletes."
