Virginia Union University's women's volleyball team and men's golf team have been awarded the Dr. Freddie Vaughns Highest Team Academic Award by the CIAA for having the highest team Grade Point Average (GPA) in the conference.
The Virginia Union men's golf team had the highest among men's sports with a 3.66 cumulative grade point average while the women's volleyball team led the CIAA with a 3.62 cumulative GPA.
"Our Virginia Union Volleyball ladies are a class act through and through!," said VUU Volleyball head coach Joe Sullivan. "They are all leaders with great vision, focused on success both on and off the court! I have been blessed to have the opportunity to coach such a strong group of women with high expectations. Each one of our ladies' work ethic and determination is a true testament to why they earned the highest GPA award from the CIAA! I am truly proud of each one of them, and I look forward to seeing all their future successes!"
"I continue to be very proud of the focus of this team towards their performance on the golf course and in the classroom, " said VUU Head Golf Coach E. Lee Coble. They have continued to excel academically by winning this year's Dr. Freddie Vaughn's CIAA Highest Team Academic Award and the first HBCU to Win Back-to-Back National Academic Championships. "They truly exemplify the term 'Student-Athlete.'"
The women's volleyball team opens the 2022 season on Saturday, September 3, at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Va., while the men's golf team begins play on September 26 at the Folds of Honor Collegiate in Grand Haven, Mich.
