Byers & Myers Earn POW Honors for Second Straight Week

Virginia Union University's Jada Byers has been named the CIAA Offensive Back of the Week while Brady Myers has been named the CIAA Special Teams Player of the Week, the CIAA announced on Monday, October 17.

This is the second straight week Byers and Myers have earned their awards, and it's the seventh straight week that Byers has been the Offensive Back of the Week.

"After a great team effort, I'm proud of these guys for receiving these individual awards," said VUU Head Football Coach Dr. Alvin Parker.  "They both have won these awards multiple times this year, and they both had game-changing performances on Saturday that helped us to get that win."

Byers rushed 30 times for 277 yards and a touchdown in the 27-24 overtime road victory over conference foe Bowie State. The sophomore had six rushes of at least 23 yards, including a touchdown of 23 yards and his two longest runs were 49 and 53 yards. 11 of the Hammonton, NJ, native's carries resulted in first downs. Byers also returned a kickoff 16 yards. Byers has been the CIAA's Offensive Back of the Week every week of the season so far. With 1,373 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns, Byers leads all of Division II Football in those categories.

Myers played the role of "hero" with a walk-off 42-yard field goal in overtime of the Panthers' 27-24 win over Bowie State. After Virginia Union came up with the goal line stand against the Bulldogs, the freshman calmly hit the 42-yarder to avoid a second overtime period. In the game, the Orlando, FL, native made all three of his point-after tries and connected on a field goal earlier in the game — a 20-yarder in the first quarter. His game-winning kick in overtime came from 42 yards and it was redemption for the kicker after he missed a 43-yarder before halftime.

Virginia Union will travel to Lincoln University, Pa., to face Lincoln University of Pennsylvania at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22.
