Mallory Double-Double Helps #2 R-MC Men’s Hoops Win at H-SC

 Senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) scored 12 points to surpass 1,000 career points, as the second-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team posted a 69-57 ODAC victory at Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday evening.

How it Happened:

  • Mallory had a layup to start the scoring before the Tigers scored nine straight points to go up 9-2. Junior Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) hit a three-pointer to end the run. H-SC had an 18-12 lead before a three-pointer by sophomore Vincent Payne (Frederick, Md./St. Maria Goretti) capped a 14-4 run as the Yellow Jackets went up 26-22 with 2:25 remaining in the first half. Payne buried another trey to give R-MC a 31-25 advantage before a late Tiger triple make it 31-28 at the half.
  • Freshman Jabril Robinson (Derwood, Md./South Kent Prep) hit a three-pointer to end a 7-2 spurt as the Yellow Jackets took a 38-30 lead four minutes into the second stanza. The Tigers tallied seven straight to pull within one at 38-37 with 14:25 left. Freshman Keishawn Pulley Jr. (Louisa, Va./St. Christopher's) had two triples in a 12-3 run as the visitors took a 52-40 advantage midway through the second period. A jumper by Mallory pushed the lead to 16 at 61-45 with 5:20 remaining. A layup by Robinson extended the margin to 18 at 65-47 with 3:30 left. H-SC scored eight in a row before a layup by Mallory stopped the streak and made it 67-55 with 40 seconds remaining. Talbert hit two free throws before a late bucket by the Tigers made the final 69-57.
By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had four players score in double figures for the third time in the past four games. Mallory had 14, while Robinson added 13. Talbert and Coble both scored a dozen.
  • Mallory has 1,222 career points, tied with Kevin Wood for 27th on R-MC's career scoring list.
  • Talbert has 1,007 career points, the 43rd Yellow Jacket to reach 1,000 career points. He stands in 42nd place on R-MC's career scoring list.
  • Robinson had six assists and Talbert dished out four.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 42-36 edge on the glass. Mallory and junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) both had 10 rebounds, a season-high total for Mbangue.
  • Mallory has 703 career rebounds, the 10th-highest total in program history.
  • Robinson had two steals.
  • Mallory had three blocked shots. He has 223 career blocks, a program record and the third-highest total in the history of the ODAC. Ben Strong of Guilford (2004-08) had 236 and Dwayne Evans of Roanoke (1981-85) had 225.
For the Record:

  • R-MC registered its 12th straight win over H-SC.
  • The Yellow Jackets extended their win streak to 10 games.
  • R-MC held the Tigers to a season-low 57 points.
