Monster Game by MVP Mallory Carries #3 R-MC Men’s Hoops over MC

Senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti), the tourney's Most Valuable Player, recorded his fifth double-double of the season with a career-high 29 points and 15 rebounds as the third-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outscored Maryville 81-68 in the championship game of the R-MC Coaches Tournament on Friday evening.

How it Happened:

  • Mallory had a layup and freshman Jabril Robinson (Derwood, Md./South Kent Prep) nailed a three-pointer as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 5-0 lead one minute into the contest. The Scots cut it to two at 7-5 before senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) had four points in an 8-0 run as the advantage grew to `5-5 with 14 minutes left in the first half. Maryville trailed 17-8 before Mallory had a bucket and two free throws to cap a 9-0 spurt as the lead grew to 26-8 with 7:44 remaining. R-MC had a 32-16 with five minutes left before the Scots tallied eight straight points to cut the deficit in half. Mallory scored in the lane with 40 seconds left to stop the run and make it 34-24 at the break. Mallory had 14 points and 11 rebounds in the first period.
  • Robinson hit a three-pointer to start the second half to push the advantage to 37-24 before a 13-3 run by Maryville cut it to three at 40-37 with 14:45 remaining. Freshman Keishawn Pulley Jr. (Louisa, Va./St. Christopher's) hit a triple to stop the spurt and make it 43-37 with 14 minutes left. A Talbert trey pushed the lead to nine at 46-37 two minutes later. The Yellow Jackets were up 51-44 before Mallory had seven points and Talbert added six in a 15-4 run as R-MC took a 66-48 advantage with 4:30 left. The Yellow Jackets would record the 81-63 victory.
By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had three players score in double figures. Mallory had 29, going 11 for 18 from the floor and 7 for 10 from the free throw line. Talbert added 19 and Robinson chipped in 13.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 36-32 edge on the glass. Mallory had 15 and Talbert grabbed eight.
  • Talbert led R-MC with five assists and five steals.
  • Mallory had two blocked shots. He has 220 career blocks, a program record and the third-highest total in the history of the ODAC.
For the Record:

  • R-MC extended its home win streak to 55 games, a program record and the longest current streak in Division III.
  • Mallory was tourney MVP and Talbert was on the All-Tournament Team, joined by Charlie Cochran of Maryville, Andrew Seager of Rowan and Adam Stoltzfus of Lancaster Bible.
  • Rowan outlasted Lancaster Bible 108-98 in overtime in the consolation game.
