Mallory Sets ODAC Blocks Mark for #2 R-MC Men’s Hoops at RC

Senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 16 points and matching his career best with 18 rebounds while registering three blocked shots to break the ODAC career record as the second-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team rallied for a 58-46 ODAC victory at Roanoke on Saturday afternoon.

Records: R-MC 17-1, 9-0 ODAC; RC 14-4, 7-2 ODAC

How it Happened:

  • The Maroons had the first bucket of the game before a jumper in the lane by senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) leveled the score at 2-2. RC scored the next five points before consecutive field goals by Mallory made it 7-6 eight minutes into the contest. Four free throws by the Maroons pushed their advantage back to five before three straight points by junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) made it 11-9 midway through the first period. RC used a 10-2 run to go up 21-11 before Mallory hit a three-pointer to end the spurt and make it 21-14 with 1:10 remaining, which would be the halftime score. Mallory had seven points and seven rebounds at the break.
  • Talbert had a three-point play to start the second half to cut the deficit to four. The Maroons pushed the lead back to eight at 27-19 before a three-pointer by freshman Keishawn Pulley Jr. (Louisa, Va./St. Christopher's) capped a 12-2 spurt as the Yellow Jackets took their first lead at 31-29 with 13 minutes remaining. RC had an edge of 33-32 with 11 minutes left before a pair of treys by freshman Jabril Robinson (Darwood, Md./South Kent Prep) highlighted a 15-2 run as R-MC took a 47-35 lead with 6:45 left. The Maroons cut it to nine before Talbert had a pair of layups in a final 6-3 spurt to end the game to make the final 58-46.
By The Numbers:

  • Mallory had three blocked shots. The first came late in the first half to give him 237 for his career, one more than Ben Strong of Guilford (2004-08) for the ODAC career mark. Mallory upped his career total to 239.
  • R-MC had three players score in double figures. Mallory had 16, Pulley added 13 and Talbert finished with 10. Sophomore Vincent Payne (Frederick, Md./St. Maria Goretti) hit two triples and two free throws for eight points.
  • Mallory has 1,299 career points, placing him 22nd on R-MC's career scoring list.
  • Talbert has 1,085 career points, standing in 38th on R-MC's career scoring list.
  • R-MC missed its first nine three-pointers before going 1 for 11 in the first half. The Yellow Jackets made six straight treys in the second half, going 7 for 13 from behind the arc after intermission.
  • The Yellow Jacket defense held the Maroons to 29% shooting from the floor (16-55). Roanoke went 0 for 9 on three-point attempts.
  • Mallory led the victors with five assists.
  • R-MC had a 41-33 edge on the glass. Along with 18 by Mallory, junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) grabbed a season-high 12.
  • Mallory has 756 career rebounds, the eighth-highest total in program history.
  • Mallory also had a pair of steals.
For the Record:

  • The Yellow Jackets extended their win streak to 15 games.
  • The R-MC defense held Roanoke to a season-low 46 points. The Yellow Jackets have held their past two opponents below 50 points and five of their past six under 60.
  • R-MC has won 11 straight, 24 of the past 25 and 37 of the past 40 contests against Roanoke.
  • Roanoke was ranked No. 26 in the D3hoops.com poll this past week.
  • The game was played in the Bast Center Gym because of water damage to the floor in the Cregger Center from a broken water pipe.
