VSU Accounting Students Offer Free Tax Assistance To Local Residents
The VSU Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program has combined experiential learning with community outreach for more than three decades.
Virginia State University Accounting students have partnered with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to provide tax assistance to local residents. As part of the Special Topics Service-Learning course in the VSU Reginald F. Lewis College of Business (RFLCB), students will provide tax preparation and filing assistance to Tri-Cities residents. The service is for 2022 individual or joint filers with an annual income of less than $60,000. For the past 36 years, VSU accounting majors have provided this service as part of our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. “Our College of Business is a major attraction and a point of pride for Virginia State University,” said Dr. Donald E. Palm, VSU Provost, and Executive Vice President. “This initiative exemplifies the experiential learning our students receive at VSU. It also represents our student’s civic engagement and impactful community service.” Tax information and valid identification must be dropped off in Singleton Hall, room 326, on the VSU campus. A VITA worker will call clients to review the tax return. Once the return is picked up and approved by the taxpayer, the return will be filed electronically via the IRS E-file system. The site is staffed three days a week from February 7-April 7, 2023: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Wednesdays from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. The service will not be available on days when the University is closed. For more information, please contact Dr. Theodore Andrews, Jr., Assistant Professor of Accounting and VITA Manager, at (804) 504-7079; or Ms. Bertha Morgan at VSU Accounting and Finance Department at (804) 524-5842
