GORDON SMITH SOARS TO ATLANTIC 10 FIELD PERFORMER OF THE WEEK HONORS
Senior Gordon Smith has been awarded Atlantic 10 Field Performer of the Week for the week of Jan. 23-29, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Hailing from Wilmington, Del., Smith started his 2023 season in style by winning the long jump at the Patriot Games on Saturday, Jan. 28, hosted by George Mason in Fairfax, Va. Smith went 7.02 meters (23'-0.5") on his winning jump, a mark that puts him in a tie for fourth in the Atlantic 10 so far this indoor season. Smith set his long jump personal record of 7.16 meters (23'-6") at last season's Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships, which was also held at George Mason.
The VCU track & field team will travel out-of-state this weekend to two meets in the Boston, Mass., area. On Friday, Feb. 3, the Black and Gold will compete at the Crimson Elite Meet in Cambridge, Mass., hosted by Harvard University. The Rams will also take part in the Bruce Lehane Scarlet & White Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 3 and 4, hosted by Boston University. Other athletes will stay in Virginia for either the VMI Winter Relays at VMI in Lexington, Va., or the Liberty Open at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va, both taking place on Saturday, Feb. 4.
