The Hanover County School Board’s newly appointed 2023 Elementary School Naming Committee is seeking input on a name for the consolidated Henry Clay and John M. Gandy elementary school that is currently under construction. The school remains scheduled to open for the 2024-25 school year.

At its meeting on Tuesday, March 14th, the Hanover County School Board approved the appointment of the 2023 Elementary School Naming Committee in accordance with School Board Policy 4-3.8. This committee, which is composed of a representative from each magisterial district, will meet in the coming weeks to discuss the name of the consolidated elementary school. Hanover County Public Schools’ Director of Facilities and Director of Elementary Education will facilitate the work of the committee.

The committee is seeking public input as it conducts its work. Students, families, staff, and community members may provide input by emailing schoolname@hcps.us or by calling (804) 365-4527 by 12 p.m. on Friday, March 24, 2023. Please note that, in accordance with School Board Policy, geographic location, environmental features, and historical considerations are the primary factors for consideration.

The School Board is scheduled to receive a single name for consideration from the committee at its April 11 business meeting before voting on the name at its May 9 business meeting.

More information on the consolidated elementary school can be found in a story published by the Town in 2022 and on the HCPS website
