Public Utilities customers can receive assistance in paying their water/sewer bills

Hanover County issued the following announcement on Aug. 11

Customers of Hanover County Public Utilities are invited to apply for the second round of the department’s Water and Sewer Utility Relief Program.

Grant funds are available through the federal CARES Act to help customers who were adversely impacted by the COVID-19 crisis paying bills dated between May 19, 2020 and July 6, 2021.

To be considered, customers will need to complete a Customer Intake Form attesting to the fact that they have been impacted by the COVID crisis. This is a grant requirement. Both residential and non-residential customers are eligible for assistance. Examples of impacts for residential customers include being unable to work because of the disease, having COVID-related medical bills, losing a job due to the crisis, having work hours cut-back due to the crisis, or having to leave a job to take care of a family member. Impacts on non-residential customers could include mandatory closures, the costs of implementing protections for customers or employees and reduced occupancy rates, for example.

The Customer Intake Form is available on the County’s website under Paying Water & Sewer Bills at www.hanovercounty.gov/utilitycustomerrelief. Letters are being mailed to potentially eligible customers beginning this week. To be certain your application is evaluated for assistance, you must get your completed Customer Intake Form to the department by 5 p.m. on Monday, September 13, 2021. Applications received after this date may not be evaluated, depending on whether grant funds remain available.

Forms may be delivered directly to the Department of Public Utilities at 7516 County Complex Road, Hanover VA 23069; mailed to P.O. Box 470 Hanover VA 23069-0470 (please allow at least seven days for delivery); completed and submitted online on the County’s website at www.hanovercounty.gov/utilityreliefprogram or completed and emailed  to the Department at utilityrelief@hanovercounty.gov

“We have approximately $290,000 of grant funds remaining at this time to assist our customers,” said Steven Herzog, Director of the Department of Public Utilities. “We encourage all customers who are eligible to apply for this assistance.”

If funds remain after the September 13, applications will be processed on a first come, first serve basis until funds are exhausted or until October 29, 2021.

Virginia’s statewide moratorium on utility disconnections is ending in late August and the Department could disconnect customers for non-payment after October 1, after eligible customer have had the opportunity to receive assistance paying bills through this program.
