ONLINE COURSE: RELIGIOUS EDUCATION THEORY & PRACTICE (FOR CHRISTIAN EDUCATOR CERTIFICATION)

Online Course Title: Religious Education Theory & Practice, a Christian Educator certification course

Note: This online course meets the requirements for the Christian Educator certification in the PC(USA), but is open to all. A participant does not need to be seeking certification as a Christian Educator to enroll in this course.

Course Dates:  This course will meet online April 18 – June 10, 2022

Led by:  Dr. Cindy Kissel-Ito, Associate Professor of Christian Education, Union Presbyterian Seminary

Instructor Bio: Dr. Cindy Kissel-Ito is Associate Professor of Christian Education at Union Presbyterian Seminary. She also directs the Master of Arts in Christian Education Program at the seminary. Her ministry has consistently embodied the importance of intentional engagement in the Christian Life that is invigorated by teaching/learning the Bible. Dr. Kissel-Ito is a Presbyterian minister in the PC(USA).

Course Description: This thirty-hour online course seeks to engage participants in investigations of the theoretical foundations and current practices of educational ministry. Participants will explore theories and practices that shape and support educational ministry, articulate a personal religious education theory, and engage in curriculum design and evaluation. The course prepares educators for church leadership in the area of Religious Education Theory and Practice, and fulfills the requirements for coursework in this area for PC(USA) education certification. This course is open to all and participants do not need to be seeking certification in order to participate.

Course Format: This course will meet entirely online, both asynchronously and synchronously.

Each week, asynchronous online course work will be assigned. Those assignments and course documents will be posted on Blackboard. Each registered participant will receive login credentials to Blackboard, the seminary’s learning management system.

Additionally, live class meetings will be held bi-weekly, on Tuesdays, April 19 through May 31, 2022, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. EDT, via Zoom technology. Participation in the weekly class meetings is required. Each registered participant will receive the Zoom class meeting link prior to the beginning of the course. Participants will need an electronic device equipped with a reliable Internet connection, built-in or external microphone, and a built-in or external webcam.

Course Syllabus: The course syllabus is shared after participants register and within 1-2 weeks of the course start date. The list of required texts will be provided ahead of the course syllabus once registered.

Course Tuition:  $295, excludes cost of required texts, if register by February 28, 2022. (Note: Beginning March 1, 2022, a price increase of $25 will be added to registration. Register early and save).

CEUs:  3.0, certificates of course completion will be provided if all course requirements are met.
