MATTIAS, RAMS COME UP BIG IN LITTLE ROCK

The short story: Junior Mattias Varjun hasn't been a VCU Ram for long, but he hasn't wasted any time making his mark. The Middle Tennessee State transfer shot 7-under to place second and lead VCU this week at the Little Rock Invitational, his fourth straight strong performance of the fall season.

FIRST TEE

  • Varjun shot 68-69-72 on Chenal Country Club's 7,115-yard layout. He finished one stroke behind individual medalist Ryan Dupuy of Southern Miss
  • VCU, which held a share of the lead heading into Tuesday's final round, placed second overall at 5-over (288-281-300). Southern Miss was also crowned team champion behind Dupuy. UTEP (+10), Troy (+11) and 30th-ranked Little Rock (+16) rounded out the top five
  • Senior George Saunders (75-69-76) and junior Jayce Hargrove (74-70-77) tied for 21st and 25th, respectively, for the Rams, while freshman Clemente Silva shot an opening-round 72 on the way to a 32nd-place effort (72-73-78)

INSIDE THE SCORECARD

  • Varjun has recorded top-15 finishes in each of his four tournaments as a Ram, including a pair of top-10 efforts in his past two starts
  • Monday's back-to-back 68-69 rounds were the fourth and fifth sub-70 rounds of the fall
  • VCU tied with host Little Rock for the tournament lead in par 3 scoring (3.13) and was second in par 4 scoring (4.20)
  • Varjun registered a team-high 12 birdies, as well as two eagles, in the tournament
