ASARE HITS GAME-WINNER, RAMS TOP SETON HALL IN PARADISE JAM OPENER

The Short Story: Freshman guard Mary-Anna Asare scored the game-winning basket on a driving layup with 3.2 seconds left in the opening game of the Paradise Jam.


OPENING TIP: 

  • Sarah Te-Biasu scored a team-high 14 points along with three assists and just one turnover. She shot 5-of-10 from the field and was 3-of-3 at the free throw line
  • Samantha Robinson scored a season-high 10 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Robinson shot 5-of-9 from the floor
  • Mary-Anna Asare was the third Ram in double figures, scoring 11 points along with three boards
  • VCU shot a season-high 48.2 percent from the field despite going just 3-of-13 from 3-point range. The Rams limited Seton Hall to shoot just 39 percent overall
  • VCU outscored the Pirates 38-24 in the paint and 21-11 off the bench
  • Seton Hall was led by Lauren Park-Lane who scored 16 points
     
HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • VCU and Seton Hall played an evenly matched first quarter with the Pirates leading 17-14 heading into the second
  • VCU trailed 23-22 with 6:27 left in the second quarter before an 8-0 run, capped off by an Asare 3-pointer, gave the Rams a 30-23 lead
  • The Rams were up 35-26 at halftime after shooting 44.4 percent in the second quarter and outscoring the Pirates 8-0 in points off turnovers
  • VCU led by as many as 12 points in the third quarter and ultimately led 47-39 going into the final quarter
  • Seton Hall made a fourth quarter run , outscoring VCU 22-12 and taking a 61-60 lead with 27 second left after a pair of Park-Lane free throws.
  • On the ensuing possession, VCU ran the clock down before Te-Biasu drove into the paint and pass to Asare on the baseline for the game-winning layup
  • Seton Hall's Sidney Cooks missed her shot attempt on the game's final possession as the Rams held on for the win
