Football & Men's Basketball Record Wins Over #2 Ranked Teams

For the first time in recent history, both the Virginia Union University football team and the VUU men's basketball team have recorded wins over the #2-ranked teams in the nation within the same calendar year.

The football Panthers defeated #2-ranked Valdosta State University 45-40 on Saturday, September 10, in Valdosta, Ga.

The basketball team downed #2-ranked Augusta University 83-62 on Saturday, December 3, in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

"What Coach Butler's team did against #2 Augusta was nothing short of amazing," said VUU Head Football Coach Dr. Alvin Parker.  "Our student-athletes show that they rise to the occasion in big games. With also having the big win against the #2 team during the football season it now shows the world that the programs at VUU not only competes with the top teams in the nation but also wins."

"This is definitely the biggest win since I've switched over to coaching on the men's side," said VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler. "Augusta University played in the Division II National Championship game last year and returned a lot of their top players so it's great for our program to get back on the national stage beating the #2 ranked team in the country.  We want to build on this win and take it one game at a time and hopefully we can bring another National Championship back to Virginia Union University."

Virginia Union University's men's basketball team will now take on Salem University at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
