Johnson's Trey Lifts Lady Panthers to Double-Overtime Win
Virginia Union University's Taniah Johnson hit a three-pointer with four seconds left in the second overtime to lift the Lady Panthers to a 93-90 double-overtime win over a tough Washington Adventist University squad on Monday, January 30, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
Johnson's trey capped a dramatic comeback which saw the Lady Panthers trail by as much as 18 points in the third quarter before pulling even with 1:40 left in regulation.
VUU's Ny Langley led all scorers with 33 points while Johnson finished with 23 points.
Virginia Union's freshman sensation Bruni Martinez scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds.
The win was also the third in the last four games for the Lady Panthers.
"Our team showed character and fight tonight," said VUU Head Women's Basketball Coach Tierra Terry. "We could have given up when they had a big lead but we fought back every minute including the double overtime. Bruni Martinez was instrumental in this victory with 16 points and 20 rebounds. Ny Langley stepped up big with 33 points and eight rebounds while Taniah Johnson secured the win with a huge 3 pointer. We are so proud of this team and are looking to keep progressing forward."
Virginia Union will now travel to Charlotte, N.C., to face Johnson C. Smith University at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1.
